Claudia Barreira is a Brazilian artist based in London, UK, working primarily with ceramics and painting. With a background in Art History and Fine Arts, her practice explores the intricate connections between environment, material, and memory. Her work prioritizes character over perfection and expression over control, emphasizing the natural traits of the material while capturing the dynamic tension between fragility and strength.

Claudia moved to London in 2022 after living in Canada for 10 years. Since then, she completed a First Class BA (Hons) in Contemporary Design Crafts at the University of Hertfordshire, followed by an MA in Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art.

Working from her studio in southwest London, her work has been acquired by private collectors across the UK, Canada and Brazil.

STATEMENT

Claudia’s practice is defined as an evolving process that reshapes itself in response to materials, experimentation, and external influences. Rooted in continuous research and investigation, her process is tactile and intimate, drawing inspiration from the shapes, textures, and transience found in the natural environment. Ancient history and art movements are also important references in her practice, at times grounding the work in a concept, and at other times becoming the concept itself.

In her ceramic practice, Claudia’s hand-built sculptures merge self-developed methods with ancient techniques, commonly combining wild soil with commercial clay. Clay is continuously altered, torn, and shaped to form pieces that intentionally break away from the symmetry of the circular form. Through repetitive, meditative gestures, her hands become both tool and guide, engaging in a process that seeks balance between structure and spontaneity.

Claudia’s paintings are informed by her connection to abstract art, particularly the work of female expressionist artists. Through an intuitive process, her compositions emerge in layered washes, textured surfaces, and bold, earthy pigments, many derived from the wild clay used in her sculptural vessels. When presented alongside her ceramic works, the paintings establish a dialogue between material, surface, and form, bridging two and three-dimensional expressions within a unified visual language.
